Interview With Chuck Loesch

The man behind No Control Radio talks about metal culture in Austin, and of course black metal comes up a couple of times. Photo by Allison Narro.

What are you least knowledgeable or unsure about when it comes to the world of metal?

Well, it's funny, because the one thing you can't do in heavy metal is be a poser. You can't pretend you know something you don't, because people see right through you in a heartbeat. And I've admitted from the onset of my shows that the one genre I have trouble with is black metal. I've never been a big, a huge black metal fan. So, you know, I would never lie and say I know all about these bands or this band or whatever. I have trouble pronouncing them half the time. I swear, if I only knew Swedish...I'd be done. My career in metal would be completely solved. But that's the one spot where I wish I knew a little bit more, and I've got people that do know it and have helped me learn more. I think it's important to always kind of be opened-minded about it and be ready to learn more.
