Alcest Also Has a New One

That's so weird. I was going to write about this band because I think they're the best bridge between adventurous indie rock listeners, specifically those drawn to the prettier but still meaty textures of bands like Sigur Ros and My Bloody Valentine, to the cleaner and less brittle end of black metal. And shit, I didn't even have the chance to be all "blah blah I really liked their last record" because they've got a new one coming up.

Entitled Les Voyages De L'Âme, it comes out the 31st of January.

Tracklist:

1. Autre Temps
2. Là Où Naissent Les Couleurs Nouvelles
3. Les Voyages De L'Âme
4. Nous Sommes L'Emeraude
5. Beings Of Light
6. Faiseurs De Mondes
7. Havens
8. Summer's Glory

Ancestor - Cuban Black Metal

Black metal is everywhere. Just found out about this Cuban black metal act Ancestor, and you can read more about the 'scene' in Havana here.

Best quote: Another less enthusiastic “old guard” fan, “El Pequeño,” got there early saying, “I’m not really into this anymore. I just came because I’m sick of TV.”

The Dread Lair Lands Showcase At Hoeks

The Dread Lair out of Houston is hosting a showcase at Hoeks Death Metal Pizza on January 21st, starting at 8pm. Hoeks is a joint on what we now call "dirty 6th" (meaning west of the highway, despite the "east" address) and I've visited the shop a few times previously (meaning I was drunk and looking for pizza). It's a dark place, and kinda small as far as my hazy recollection, but that hasn't stopped them from booking four bands - Humut Tabal, Plutonian Shore, Spectral Manifest, Venomous Supremacy, and Mhinotahn.

More about the Dread Lair, from Facebook: "The Dread Lair specializes in the sale, distribution and promotion of underground extreme metal from all over the world. This is done through consignments and trades mainly. The idea is to help one another with the time and cost of promotion, sales and distribution at the lowest cost possible with maximum gain, thus building a coalition of artists, labels, distros and zines that can help one another as we build an infrastructure in this era much like used to be done back in what we would call the 'old school.'"

Absu Live In SA

I said I was going to review Absu in San Antonio, and sure enough - I did! My friend Arian and I are both from SA, and we drove down from Austin to see the show and hang out with family. A picture of me enjoying the Lone Star I bought plus one that was brought over by a Lone Star representative follows, as do a picture of Morbus 666 and Nightbringer that Arian shot. The whole thing can be seen on Brooklyn Vegan.

We went to the unflashy as hell Taqueria Datapoint, and it was delicious. Highly recommended.
